Poppy seeds are often used to aid sleep, as well as to attract love, luck, fertility, and money when carried or consumed. Poppy seeds make particularly good offerings to the dead, given their association with deities who have an affinity for death or the afterlife. Poppy seeds can also be used to create confusion and delay- especially when combined with black mustard seed - when included in a poppet. Due to poppy's production of opium alkaloids and its sedative effects, it is heavily associated with death and sleep. Nowadays, poppy seeds are processed and harvested in such a way as to get rid of these opium alkaloids - and as a result are safe to consume.
