Sassafras is a deciduous tree native to Eastern North America and Eastern Asia. The bark and roots of this tree are very aromatic and tend to possess a strong flavour comparable to root beer. The twigs of the sassafras tree were used as a prototypical toothbrush due to their pleasant flavour and antiseptic qualities. Traditionally, however, sassafras was most regularly used for skincare, as their anti-inflammatory properties and possession of tannic acid and a compound called Sassafrid. This was done by making a poultice of the leaves, which was then applied to the affected area to reduce inflammation, discoloration, and pain.

Sassafras is usually utilized in money and prosperity magic. Keep a sassafras leaf in your wallet to attract wealth, or sprinkle the root in your wallet for the same effect. Sassafras can be included in spell bags/jars to promote healing. Sleeping with sassafras in your pillow enhances your sleep, protects you from nightmares, and can help you make sound financial decisions.

It should be noted that, despite its purported health benefits, sassafras bark and roots contain a compound called safrole - a known hepatocarcinogen. It is for this reason that safrole has been banned from use in the United States. The leaves of the Sassafras tree don't contain this chemical, however, it is always best to exercise caution when using any new herb internally.
