Blue cohosh is a perennial plant that grows through eastern North America, typically in damp, wooded areas. Due to overharvesting and logging, blue cohosh is considered "threatened", but not yet endangered. The plant's seeds can take up to three seasons to germinate, which is a contributing factor in its availability in the wild.

Blue cohosh has long been used by the indigenous peoples of Turtle Island (cohosh is an Algonquin word meaning "rough", likely a reference to the plant's rhizomes) to aid in complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. It is uterotonic, which can induce contractions and expedite the labour process. It can also reduce uterine and ovarian pain that may occur with pregnancy and childbirth. Due to its anti-inflammatory qualities can also be used to treat arthritis and other ailments caused by inflammation.

Magically, blue cohosh root is very similar to black cohosh root, and the two can be used interchangeably. Both plants are used to protect objects, people, and places, and both can be used to instill courage into it's wearer. Blue cohosh can be hung above your home entrance to ward off negative energies and entities, and can be burned to purify a space. Hang a branch of blue cohosh over your bed to strengthen commitment and fidelity.
