Violet is a creeping perennial native to Europe and Asia, though they can now be found throughout the United States and Canada. The flowers and leaves of the violet plant should be harvested and dried in the spring, and the roots should be harvested and dried in the autumn.

Violet is an effective treatment for cold and flu symptoms when brewed into a tea or syrup. This is due to its expectorant and demulcent qualities, which have been long understood and utilized in European herbalism traditions to clear congestion in the chest and throat. The roots of the plant are much more potent than the rest of the plant, and when consumed in high doses can become emetic, stimulating vomiting.

The understanding of violet being a plant for love magic spans most traditions. Almost everywhere we can see some part of the plant being used for all manner of love magics and spells, with the leaves and the flowers being the most utilized part of the plant. This understanding comes from the plant's heart-shaped leaves, which indicated to early humans that the plant had a particular affinity for matters of the heart. Placing a violet leaf in your shoe and wearing it there for 7 days was said to attract a new lover. Sometimes this was taken further by placing 3 leaves in your shoes which were kept in there for 7 days each for a total of 21 days. The flowers of the violet plant have slightly different applications based on their colour: white flowers represent innocence and humility, and blue flowers represent commitment and fidelity.
