The common prickly ash, sometimes called northern prickly ash, suterberry, or yellow tree, is a small tree or shrub in the citrus family. It is native to North America, being the northernmost growing plant in the citrus family.
Medicinally, the plant has a long, rich history. It was used by indigenous North Americans to treat gonorrhea, as well as various aches, pains, and circulatory issues. Traditionally, the bark was chewed to treat toothaches and headaches. Typically, a tincture is made from the bark, as its oils contain most of its medicinal properties. Prickly ash has been used to treat fevers by heating the body and causing sweating. According to author Matthew Wood inThe Earthwise Herbal Volume II, prickly ash is particularly effective for treating intense pain, especially pain associated with menstruation, nerves, and arthritis.
Magically, prickly ash is used predominantly for love and lust magic, healing magic, and protection. Its use for love and lust rituals comes from the naturally heating and activating properties of the plant. Its association with protection comes from the physical appearance of the shrub, which also contributed to its common name – as it is covered with large spines strong enough to tear clothing and skin.
